Wine Wednesday - The Power of Zalto - #WW
As I have grown, so has my wine glass collection. I used to have an assortment of mis matched, who knows where they came from, wine glasses. Now I have a bar stocked with every type and brand of wine glass all lined up in pretty rows - this, of course makes me very happy. Us wine geeks normally have one or two glasses that we covet - ones that are used for daily use as well as on special occasions.
While setting up professional tastings, including my own tastings at home, I have had the opportunity to try out many different brands of wine glasses, and have learned the importance of what you drink your wine from. The proper glass can help to extract and develop the aromas and flavors of a wine. Your experience with a wine can be totally changed when tasted out of a different glasses.
So, as you might imagine, when I heard ravings of a new brand of wine glasses out on the market, I knew I wanted to give them a taste drive. Not to mention the name of these glasses was Zalto… How can you resist not trying a glass out with that name? Fortunately for me, I was the lucky recipient of a gift of these special glasses, and boy am I glad I was.
Zalto's website claims that "the curves of the bowls are tilted at the angles of 24°, 48° and 72°, which are in accordance to the tilt angles of the earth. The ancient Greeks and Romans utilized this triumvirate of angles with their supply repositories, finding that produce stayed fresh for a longer time, and also showed improved taste. Due to these cosmic parallels, we believe that a wine can reach its utmost potential in our glass."
This is a very interesting concept, and after using these hand blown glasses, I have to admit, I am very impressed. I have never experienced such a lightweight glass that nearly sings with the slightest of touch. Delicate, with modern lines, they truly impress, and are the perfect pairing to any wine.
While I will not be able to stock my whole bar full of these beauties, I will covet the ones I have and hope, hope, hope they do not break, because if one did, I might just shed a tear or two.
Fun wine glass experiment here - Take one of your old thick wine glasses, that has probably been in the back of your cupboard for some time, and one of your finer wine glasses, and put them to the test. Place the two side by side and pour the same amount of wine in both glasses. Begin your comparison first by smelling the wine, and then by tasting. I guarantee you will notice a difference. Then you can try two different styles of wine glasses, i.e. Bordeaux vs. Burgundy to further examine how each varietal is deserving of its own glass shape.
Happy Tasting!
